Austin City Limits Music Festival,

Press Conference, September 29, 2002

On Sunday, September 29, 2002 during the Press Conference, according to Jeff Petterson, co-producer of Austin City Limits, Saturday the estimates on how many people were going to arrive to the concert were incorrect. For a couple of hours, there was a delay on the amount of buses carrying people to the concert.

The director of Capitol Metro got to central command and within 45 minutes was able to add more buses to the fleet taking concertgoers to Zilker Park.

For Sunday, the promoters of the concert were ready to deal with the amount of people who wanted to hear some great music and have fun. The lines to get to the concert were not as long as the previous day thanks to the prompt response from Capitol Metro.

One thing that needs to be stated was that the low ticket prices would not be have been possible without the help of all the sponsors.

Steve Bush mentioned that Schlotzsky’s will be a sponsor of the ACL Music Festival for years to come since they share many things in common. Both were born in Austin within one year of the other.

Charlie Jones, Director of Events, Capital Sports & Entertainment, booked acts with a handful of agents and within 2 1/2 weeks they had all the acts ready.

One of the questions asked to the musicians was if their style of writing had changed after the aftermath of September 11 2001.

Kelly Willis stated that she was not able to write a song after the events, but she has been able to recover ever since music is a good healing tool.

Tift Merritt was on the studio and had just finished writing a song for a friend of hers whose father had died in Vietnam. The song talked about America in the 1960’s and she had the daunting task of hearing the song after 9/11, specially the line ‘where were you when the plane went down’ – Tift made the decision to keep the song but it now has a double meaning for her.

Day 2

Allison Moorer was touring when the events happened, and decided to continue singing instead of canceling dates and it was a visceral experience, but she carried on and felt good when people came to thank them for touring. She felt people wanted to heal and that gave her the force to carry on.

All the acts I was able to catch both days were top notch. People had a great time and many agreed this was something that was long overdue. Our appreciation goes to all the promoters for making it possible for the festival to come to life. Austin needed to have an event we can call our own.

At the end of the second day, I talked to a few people, trying to find out what their thoughts were. A couple of guys told me they had been inspired to follow their dream and work hard at getting their band together after seeing all the top notch music during the weekend.

The festival was put together in less than a month. With a whole year to plan it, we look forward to the next Austin City Limits Music festival and we know it is going to be even bigger and better than this year's.
