Jim Scarborough's CD Release Party at the Saxon Pub
by Laura Rojo

On Thursday February 13th 2003, we attended the CD release party for Jim Scarborough's new album Night Cafe at The Saxon Pub. The place was packed and people were having a good time. Jim had left the Austin music scene for three years (he was first in Tulsa, OK then in Minneapolis, MN.) He missed Austin (probably the cold in Minnesota had a lot to do with it), so after taking four months off, he returned back to our beautiful city.

Jim worked with Dave Sebree (his Blood Brother) who produced, mixed, engineered and also played some mean guitar on the CD. Jim mentioned that it took them one and a half years to finish the CD. The joke among all the musicians who worked on it was that if they didn't finish it soon, they would have to redo the vocals because Jim's voice was going to change at age 75!

Growing up, Jim did not have records around the house, but his dad brought him a radio during one of his tours from Vietnam, so a new world opened for him when he first listened to Rock and Roll. The radio had an ear piece, so when his mom would check on him, she would think he was sleep while Jim lay awake all night listening to the music that was being played through the airwaves.

The CD is very personal and through its lyrics, you can see snapshot of Jim's live. Among my favorite tracks are Dreams, Night Cafe, Survivors and All Over.

The band played a great set:
Steve Samuel -drums
Mike Hynes - bass
Phil Redmond - keyboards
Joe Morales and John Mills - horn section
